Rob Taylor is now happily retired

Career History

After graduating from Lanchester Polytechnic (Coventry) with an Honours Degree in Engineering, Rob emigrated to South Africa to join Union Corporation as a "Learner Official".  This was the start of his career in the international mining and metallurgy industry, a career spanning more than 40 years.

Rob gained his Mechanical Engineer's Certificate of Competency and moved to Anglo American where he was appointed Section Engineer on the Tertiary Vertical Shaft of Western Deep Levels - then the deepest mine in the world.

Rob retained his ties with the UK and gained Chartered status as a Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Following periods with Dorbyl Heavy Engineering and RUC Mining Contracting, Rob returned to the UK and joined Techpro Mining and Metallurgy, where he qualified as a Fellow of the Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.

Rob left Techpro in 1994 to work as an independent engineering consultant and formed Taylor Mining Limited.

Rob's role soon developed into Project Management and he took a break from consulting to join Dundee Precious Metals where he was appointed Vice President Projects.

Rob returned to consulting before retiring, and is now indulging his passion for international travel through foreign holidays rather than work assignments.

Below are photos from a few of the projects that Rob has managed - many in remote locations and some in extremes of climate!

-40 deg C in Canada

A six month assignment to expand and re-commission a mill complex in Ontario, Canada.

This necessitated procurement and installation of a new primary ball mill, a new cone crusher, screen and associated equipment, structures, drives and controls.  Rob liaised with the engineering design team in London and coordinated international equipment suppliers, while managing the site project team, local fabrication and erection contractors, with close liaison with mine management and staff.

The timetable for this fast-track project was very ambitious, but was completed on schedule and within budget with zero lost-time accidents.

+45 deg C in Central African Republic

Compilation of a Scoping Study for a gold deposit in the Central African Republic.

This required a visit to the remote geological exploration camp and meetings with local government representatives and local contractors.

The Study was compiled to the satisfaction of the client who provided the geological data and wrote that chapter of the report.  Rob coordinated the mining, mineral processing and tailings management chapters of the report by an international specialist consultants.  Rob wrote the utilities and infrastructure chapter using quotations from suppliers.
